DOMAINE DE VILLAINE 2019 VINTAGE EN PRIMEUR
Domaine de Villaine is co-owned by Pamela and Aubert de Villaine and their nephew, Pierre de Benoist, who has managed the domaine for over 20 years. The Bouzeron holdings include some 150 year-old Aligoté vines. The domaine also has parcels in neighbouring Rully and Mercurey. The estate has been managed organically since 1986 and was certified in 1997. The wines are vinified in barrel and large oak foudres, with practically no new oak. Pierre’s recent exciting expansion into Rully means that we will have a separate offering from Domaine de Villaine shortly, with a host of new Rully premiers crus from the 2018 vintage.
BOUZERON BOURGOGNE ALIGOTÉ 2019
Price TBC
The domaine’s 17 parcels of Aligoté Doré vines cover nine hectares, of the domaine’s total 30. Aligoté’s aromatic aspect abounds this year, in delicate yellow flowers, white peach and apricot – more stone-fruited in 2019 than its habitual orchard fruit. The brisk acidity forms a taut backbone which shows the salty mineral notes to best effect. Phenolic grip on the end makes for a textured, defined finish. Vinified for 10-12 months in old oak foudres, the volume of each tailored to the individual plots.

RULLY LES SAINT-JACQUES 2019
Price TBC
This is a 1.7 hectare plot, on the plain, at the north of the appellation, south-east facing, on deep, rich soils. This tends to be the most flamboyant of the domaine’s Rullys, the peach aromas accompanied by tropical notes of pink grapefruit and tangerine zest. This is all about upfront pleasure, with the tactile density and richness balanced by fresh acidity. The yields here are very low, only 3-4 bunches per vine, with thick skinned berries. Vinified in one foudre and eight barrels, all old oak. A great earlier drinker.

MERCUREY LES MONTOTS
Price TBC
Following the first vintage of this wine in 1991, the domaine replanted this iron-rich plot in 1999 with top quality clones from Nuits-Saint-Georges. An explosive nose, of Morello cherries and wild blackberries, kirsch even. The palate is visceral and pure, intense raspberry fruit and honest grippy tannins, which are rounded out by the 70% whole bunch fermentation. This gets five days of cold pre-fermentation maceration. Bursting with life!
Corney & Barrow Score 16.5 – 17
