Burgundy can be budget friendly as well ! Try these wines from Marquis d’Angerville and get ready for the Chinese New Year!
Domaine Marquis d‟Angerville, once part-owned by the Dukes of Burgundy, lies at the very heart of Volnay. The domaine consists of 14 hectares (ha) of vines. 12.5 ha are Volnay premier cru, representing over 10% of the appellation total. The domaine has been in the family for over two centuries, having been acquired in 1805. Post the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th century, the domaine began to reconstruct its vineyards, replanting them with what are now the prized Pinot d’Angerville clones.
Guillaume d’Angerville, the current Marquis, was previously a banker working in Paris, and took over the reins here since the death of his father, Jacques, in 2003. He is supported by his brother-in-law, Renaud de Villette, who worked alongside Jacques d’Angerville for 15 years, thereby ensuring the family-run continuity of the estate.

Bourgogne Chardonnay 2018
The vines for this are on clay-rich soil in Volnay’s Grandes Terres. It receives 12 months of ageing in 350 litre barrels and six additional months on its lees in vat, the second winter in the cellar giving richness. This was picked at what François Duvivier describes as “beautiful maturity”, giving fairly rich, intense aromas of lemon and white fruit. The palate has an energetic attack and is full and fresh.
Corney & Barrow Score 16.5 – 17
Recommended drinking from 2020 – 2023
SG$68 per bottle
Bourgogne Passetoutgrains 2018
The domaine’s passetoutgrains is half Gamay, half Pinot Noir. Crunchy and red cherried, with a bitter, briny edge and a touch of kirsch. Ripe and true to style in 2018, buoyed by the Gamay acidity, this is a fabulous early drinker.
Corney & Barrow Score 16.5
Recommended drinking from 2022 – 2025
SG$60 per bottle
Volnay 1er Cru Les Frémiets 2017
There is just one foot of soil over the rock here, perhaps accounting for this wine’s intensely mineral nature. Bordering Pommard, Frémiets sits above Clos des Angles – mid-slope – where there is greater potential for complexity. More guarded on the nose and indeed sparser on the palate, yet tasting this is like communing directly with the soil. This is all about the texture – finely fragmented, with a salty tang on the finish. Can we call this a cerebral wine? Excellent ageing potential too.
Corney & Barrow Score 17.5 – 18
Recommended drinking from 2025 – 2035+
SG$165 per bottle
Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2017
This is a 0.65 hectare holding, comprising a recentlyadded parcel of old (60 year old) vines, which now accounts for almost a third of the total area. A brightly red-berried nose, which opens onto a firmly-fruited palate, with stony minerality on the mid-palate, coming to a fine point on the finish. Interesting to taste after Frémiets, as these are both very mineral-driven wines (despite coming from opposite sides of the village). At this early stage, Caillerets perhaps shows a notch more tannic weight. Give this time, it’s a baby.
Corney & Barrow Score 17.5+
Recommended drinking from 2025 – 2035
