Domaine Pierre Morey & Morey Blanc
.
“In recent months, we have had the opportunity to see how important conviviality and sharing are and how opening a beautiful bottle of wine can rejoice the heart of man!”
Anne Morey, December 2020
.
Domaine Pierre Morey’s ten hectares span the villages of Monthelie, Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, where the domaine is based.
In addition, the family has access to some choice parcels, vinified identically at the domaine and bottled under the négociant label, Maison Morey-Blanc, established in 1992.
The domaine is now run by Anne Morey, Pierre’s daughter, whilst Pierre remains co-manager. Anne’s son, Jean-Victor Morey, also joined the estate during the 2020 vintage.

BOURGOGNE ALIGOTÉ DOMAINE PIERRE MOREY 2018
This is very much a ‘proper’ Aligoté, by which I mean it is made from old vines (planted 1969) and it resonates with varietal zesty/zinginess and high-tension acidity. It comes from 1.86 hectares of domaine-owned vines in Meursault. Orchard fruit and hay, with a seated weight and a bite of reductive rigour. Fresh acidity and a hint of smoky bacon on the finish.

BOURGOGNE CÔTE D’OR DOMAINE PIERRE MOREY 2017
Planted on average in 1984, this comes from 1.76 hectares of vines in Meursault, from relatively deep clay and chalk soils. In 2017, it is labelled Bourgogne Côte d’Or, the new appellation which recognises fruit from the Côte, rather than Burgundy as a whole. Flinty, fleshy white peach fruit – you could quite happily drink this now, open and inviting.

SAINT-ROMAIN SOUS LE CHÂTEAU MAISON MOREY-BLANC 2018
This is a new wine, coming from the lieu-dit Sous le Château, on the slopes above the Ruisseau du Verger stream which trickles down from the woods above Saint-Romain. Ripe and forward, with bright apricots, peaches and zesty lemon. Combined with the cedary spice, this makes for a charming, gourmand style which will hit the ground running.

MEURSAULT LES TERRES BLANCHES DOMAINE PIERRE MOREY 2018
This 0.4 hectare plot, which lies just below premier cru Gouttes d’Or and beside Clos de Mazeray, was planted in 1989. According to Pierre Morey, it gets its richness from the former. Its name references the shallow, chalky soil. The first vintage was 2006; this is the most recent acquisition of the domaine. Compared to the domaine’s village cuvée, this has greater rigour and spicy, struck-rock definition. Pithy white peach and pear, finishing perfumed and long. Excellent focus.

MEURSAULT LES TESSONS DOMAINE PIERRE MOREY 2018
Planted in 1978, this is a 0.89 hectare mid-slope plot, above the village of Meursault. The soil is particularly stony. This is an unassuming, stealth Meursault, with absolutely nothing showy about it but which creeps up on you and charms with its elegant shape and fine, sculpted tension, finishing clipped and rocky-mineral. As Pierre Morey says, if this were a bird, it would be long and streamlined, built for speed!

PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU CHAMP GAIN DOMAINE PIERRE MOREY 2018
The second vintage of this wine, which comes from a newly acquired plot of just four ouvrées (0.17 hectares) of this stony high-slope premier cru, planted with 40 year old vines. A focused white flower nose, with a hint of toasty oak. Rich and fleshy on the attack, yet the open[1]weave texture allows the gradated chalky terroir to reveal itself. As Pierre Morey says, this has more in common with Blagny than its neighbour Folatières. Very good wine.

MONTHÉLIE DOMAINE PIERRE MOREY 2018
This is from seven lieux-dits in the heart of Monthélie, surrounding the village. The domaine owns 1.32 hectares of old vines here, planted in 1965. Dark forest fruits and violet/rhubarb perfume. Crunchy and precise raspberry fruit is lifted by excellent retained acidity, with shapely fruit-coated tannins providing structure. The finish radiates red berried sweetness.

ALOXE-CORTON 1ER CRU LES VERCOTS MAISON MOREY-BLANC 2017
Les Vercots lies between the Route Nationale and the back-road to Pernand-Vergelesses, south of the hill of Corton. This has a lovely, lifted nose of fine rose petals and pretty red berry perfume. The palate has a concentrated, small-berried intensity of cranberry and raspberry, with insinuatingly fine, fruit-coated tannins channelling the fruit. 2001 was the first vintage.

VOLNAY 1ER CRU PITURES MAISON MOREY-BLANC 2018
This was made for the first time in 2018. Pitures borders Pommard to the north east and Marquis d’Angerville’s Clos des Ducs to the south west. We know (and love) this vineyard from Domaine Lafarge, who also has a holding here. The forceful, almost tarry character is explained by its proximity to Pommard. Impressively taut, crunchy, pure red berry fruit, with a ferrous bite and fine grippy tannins.
