Bernkastel, in Germany’s Mosel wine region, is a town of great importance to the wine world. It produces some of the finest Rieslings, from vineyards which are located on steep and slate-rich slopes on this small town. It is located on the left bank of the Mosel river. The town is in the heart of the Mittelmosel (“middle Mosel”), and is arguably Germany’s top winegrowing location.

 

“Bernkasteler Doctor” is one of the most famous vineyard names in the world. Stories abound as to the origin of its name. It is well-known that the English King Edward VII, drank the Berncasteler Doctor as ‘medicine’.

 

The Doctor is a small (3.25 acre / 1.8ha) plot with south-west exposure, and with an extremely steep slope of between 60-70 degrees. In 1900, the vineyard was traded at 100 gold marks per vine, and since then it has been said as the most expensive vineyard in Germany. The soil consists of dark slate, which offers delightful delicate, spicy, and minerally in the wines.

WEINGUT WWE. DR. H. THANISCH was founded in 1636, amidst the turbulence of the Thirty Year’’ War. The house and Cellar, impressively neo-renaissance in style, was buit in 1884, on the Kues side of Bernkastel, the left bank of the Mosel. It is recorded that between 1893 and 1908, the wines from Dr Hugo Thanisch’s estate attained the highest auction results in the region.

 

The Thanisch family practise sutainable viticulture, coaxing the best out of their mature, largely ungrafted vines, planted on Devonian slate.

Berncasteler Doctor Riesling GG Trocken Weingut Dr H Thanisch (Thanisch) 2018

Slate abounds in that intensely mineral sense of focus which Riesling from this part of Germany does so well. Lemon rind and quince play second fiddle, rounding out what would otherwise verge on austere and making for a stunningly complete wine.

Rich, with a pronounced bite of acidic tension and a salty tang on the finish, which works brilliantly with the slaty minerality. The precise finish is rounded out by a lovely fleshy fruit residue coating the mouth. Textbook high quality Kabinett, seriously good.

A beautifully complete nose, of fine crushed earth minerality, ripe lime, gooseberry and apricot fruit. The palate is powerful from the off, drivingly intense and with an unabashed potency which is really rather exciting. Balanced by an intricate delicacy of acidic bone structure and mineral tension, this hits all the right notes. Stunning.

The Doctor Auslese radiates an amber-gold shimmer. Wet-stone mineral notes and slate greet you on the nose. The palate is surprisingly delicate and precise for what is, after all, the high must-weight flagship of the estate. A deft but insistent sense of mineral-driven weight pervades the palate, complementing the spiced apricot and crystallised lime fruit, through to the long, focused finish.
