Where the Sun Meets the Vine: Warm Vintage Wonders
————————————————————————
Experience the charm of recent warm vintages through the lens of Burgundy’s most revered organic and biodynamic producers. As climate patterns shift, vines have shown remarkable adaptability — yielding wines with elegant structure, vibrant acidity, and expressive character, even in the warmest years.
This month, we spotlight two exceptional producers:
Domaine Leflaive
A benchmark in biodynamic white Burgundy, known for purity and precision.
Château de La Tour
A historic gem in Clos Vougeot, crafting structured, age-worthy reds.
These wines perfectly reflect how warmth and finesse can coexist, offering a rare opportunity to taste the evolution of Burgundy in a changing climate.
Domaine Leflaive Vintage 2022
————————————————————————
“Wonderful… above all in quality. The hot, even scorching summer made us wonder how our vines would react. It is clear that they adapted very well.”
BRICE DE LA MORANDIÈRE, NOVEMBER 2023
Following the devastatingly small 2021 crop, 2022 is of both quantity and quality at Domaine Leflaive in 2022.
PULIGNY-MONTRACHET
1ER CRU LES PUCELLES
This is seen by many as the essence of the Domaine’s soul, not because at 2.8 hectares it is the largest (it isn’t),nor even because of all the premiers crus it lies closest to the grands crus (see map). No, it is because it comes closest to the classical ideal of Puligny itself, the rapier not the broadsword, the piercingly fine-grained purity rather than mere weight and above all, the taut elegance for which this vineyard is renowned. The 2022 is a beautiful wine. Golden white in colour and possessing that characteristic yearning, elusive perfume of intricate but super ripe fruit and a kick of dry limestone minerality. The palate is very taut in structure with flashes of fresh, supple, subtly rich, lithe flavours, layered and with a flare of freshness and purity on the finish.
Corney & Barrow Score 18
Recommended drinking from 2027 – 2032
Château de La Tour 2018
————————————————————————
A sunny vintage, in which the vineyards flourished.
Although the Clos-Vougeot is one block of vines, it is huge, covering 50 hectares. Château de la Tour is the largest of its 80 owners, with 5.5 hectares, or 11% of the appellation
CLOS-VOUGEOT, GRAND CRU VIEILLES VIGNES,
HOMMAGE A JEAN MORIN
Only the seventh vintage since the inaugural 2010 (there was no 2011 or 2014). This cuvée, named after François Labet’s grandfather, is made exclusively from the first bunches on the cane, the recipients of the best of the vines’ sap. So, one bunch per vine, from the few vines deemed worthy. A very aromatically attractive nose of intense raspberry fruit and menthol spice. This fresh mint tea character is, according to François, “typical of great Clos-Vougeot”. Rich on the palate, with raspberry compote and a dense fruit-coating to the firm tannins. Mocha and coffee bean notes, with rose perfume persisting. Only four barrels have been made.
Corney & Barrow Score 18.5
Recommended drinking from 2030 – 2040
