Bernkasteler Badstube

Situated around the city of Bernkastel, which is more than 1,000 years old, the Badstube vineyard has a gentler slope and richer soil. Natural springs provide all the water the vines need to produce full-bodied, assertive wines that are ideally suited to the vinifi cation of great Kabinett and Spätlese wines. The name Badstube originates from a former hot spring, which in the Middle ages heated a kind of “health spa.”

Bernkasteler Graben

The vineyard is right next to the famous Berncasteler Doctor. Like in the Doctor the vines of this vineyard grow on very steep south pointing Devon slate soil in the picturesque Moselle valley. Grown on old (20-40 years) and partly non-grafted rootstocks.

Berncasteler Doctor

The exceptional south-facing vineyard is located high above the town of Bernkastel. It is hard to demonstrate that its black slate soils and microclimate are significantly superior to those of its immediate neighbours such as Graben and Alte Badtube, and the site and its reputation have certainly benefited from having a legend attached: that of the 14th-century Archbishop Boemund II, who was miraculously cured of illness not by his physicians but by a good dose of wine from this site. The grateful prelate then conferred the name Doctor on the vineyard. The vines are ungrafted and some were planted more than a century ago.
