Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Kabinett Weingut Dr H Thanisch (Thanisch) 2018
Germany / Mosel
This estate’s long name – Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch, Erben Thanisch – means the winery of the widow (witwe, abbreviated to “Wwe”) of Dr Hugo Thanisch, as passed down the Thanisch side of the family - nearly four centuries of history here. Sofia Thanisch and her daughter Christina represent the family’s 11th and 12th generations. Christina is now working with her mother following international wine business studies at Geisenheim University and work experience in Austria and New Zealand. Sofia and Christina are the fourth and fifth women respectively to manage the estate, Sofia having taken over from her Aunt Mechtilde in 1996.
"Richer than its Kabinett siblings but with a more pronounced bite of acidic tension and a tang on the finish, which works brilliantly with the slaty minerality. The precise finish is rounded out by a lovely fleshy fruit residue coating the mouth."

Weingut Wwe. Dr. H Thanisch
Katharina Thanisch had married Dr Hugo Thanisch and they ran the estate together. In 1895, Hugo died at the age of only 42, leaving Katharina, merely thirty years old with three small children and an estate to run. The name then changed to Wwe. Dr.H. Thanisch. “Wwe” refers to ”Witwe”, meaning “widow” and thus we begin the story of strong women here. Sofia is, in fact, the fourth woman to manage the estate. With two daughters, Juliane and Christina, the latter having studied international wine business at Geisenheim, the 12th generation and 5th female looks assured at some point in the future. Sofia bears the weight of an impressive history lightly, immensely proud of her forebears. Under Katharina’s tenure Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch, Erben Thanisch, became one of the founder members of the Association of German Quality Wine Producers (VDP) in 1910.
The size of the Estate is a modest 9 hectares, the Thanisch vineyard parcels lying along a stretch of the Mosel which is relatively straight, a run of south-facing vineyards of world renown – within Zeltingen, Wehlen, Graach and Bernkastel. There is magic within the Mosel, a combination of soil, aspect, airflows, reflections from the river, slate soil and even the rooves combine to create perfect concentration and layered complexity – sublime.

Germany
Germany produces some of the world’s very finest white wines, presenting natural, grapey richness complemented by racy acidity. A really fine example sets off a roller coaster of emotion akin to a skilfully played piece of music.
